The winning project “”Readiness of Young People for Community Development”” from Guria

The global challenge of the modern world is to build a democratic society. Young people are an important link in the process of development of values and community. However, studies show that their involvement in this regard is low, and motivation is reduced. Young people are less informed about current processes. This approach damages the community.

Community development starts from school. I think that even the best constitutions and laws cannot ensure the sustainable development of democracy in the same way that the school can. The professional practice of a teacher has shown me that it is necessary to encourage students’ opinions and initiatives. Therefore, we decided to strengthen the school community by encouraging processes supporting democratic values and increasing the role of the school. We included three priority schools of Ozurgeti Municipality in the project “Readiness of Young People for Community Development”: Askana, Mtispiri, and Tskhemliskhidi, with which we signed memorandums of cooperation and created democratic clubs, developed a syllabus. It is intended for teaching democratic citizenship and human rights in schools and non-formal institutions.

Club participants transform theoretical knowledge into practical activities through the project, plan and implement school projects, develop necessary skills, participate in events planned by the school civic club, create a favorable environment, show initiative, and take responsibility for solving problems in the community.
